An Ancient Russian Dance of Today
Balerya or the “Belly Dance” is one of the two main dances in Russia. Balerya is also called Polnyjaya or Pushpoulka in Russian. It’s performed by male dancers and women who practice polo, a sport that gained popularity in Soviet times. The two dances are similar in many ways: male and female dancers twist and tuck their bodies to the right and left, while the men swing their buttocks in the air.
The origin of balerya is not clear. However, it has several similarities with the Hungarian Rumba. In both dances the central theme is dancing. The difference is that in balerya, dancers also perform acrobatic moves and twists to the right and left of the body. The movements emphasize the buttocks in both dances. However, unlike the Rumba, no music is played and the dancers are simply gliding on their toes.
There are several sub-styles of balerya. Each has its own unique style and costume. The most popular form is Polnyjaya. This is characterized by polo-style shirts, leather jackets and stripped pants. A variation of the polnyjaya costume is called Znakonsky, which consists of leather leggings and boots.
Another style is Zavodniki. This is characterized by knee-length skirts, long flowing hair and peasant blouses. Some of the women wear tops that have an obvious garter belt. The costumes are generally all white. Polnyjaya is usually less formal than Zavodniki.
The third style is called Svyazha orarshii. Balerya with long hair adorn the backs of women, while straight hair is preferred for the males. The outfits can be quite elaborate. For example, a zaivanya (traditional dress) consists of a black top, long flowing locks and a waist belt.
Balerya dancers generally have bright, colorful clothes. Their footwear should be comfortable to walk in. Shoes should be made from good quality leather. Brass instruments, such as balerya cymbals and congas, should also be used in some types of balerya. Special colors can be worn, but they should be limited to dark colors such as black or dark blue. A male dancer should always have a balerya cape, which is draped around his waist.
Balerya is not only an important Russian folk dance but it also has other forms in other countries, including Turkey, Finland, France, Egypt, and many others. Balerya is closely tied with Russian culture. Some of the most beautiful Russian paintings feature balerya, along with other folk dances from Russia and the Ukraine. The balerya repertoire features traditional folk dances from the former country.
The most famous style of balerya in the world is Svyaty. It is an ancient form of a Russian dance, and it was first performed by women as late as the 19th century. Svyaty was created out of the needs of the peasantry, who required agricultural work to be performed in order to make a living. Balerya was created to entertain the crowds at these work sites. Women had to dance to entertain the workers. The dance steps became fast and technical, and the audience would cheer when the women dance in perfect synchronization.
Balerya continues to evolve, as modern day balerya shows more versatility than ever before. As women learn the art of balerya, they can perform in competitions with male dancers from other countries. They may even decide to create their own shows, and tour the world. Balerya is not just a Russian dance, but a way of life for the people of the former Soviet Union.
